![]() It will be a while before I go back as the food was fair, the atmosphere was basic and the price was high for what you got. This was a restaurant I remember growing up in north Jersey as being a place to go for a good time with good food. Looking around the other tables, the average age looked to be 80 and I worried our waitress could keel over any minute from a heart attack. The spƤtzle was fair, kind of dry and tasteless. ![]() For main entrees we had schnitzel, sauerbraten typical German fare. The taste was excellent just lacking the lobster. Would have expected a few morsels given the price. Starters was lobster bisque, very good but no pieces of lobster in the soup. I always remember a German band playing but this Saturday evening we must have been early, so was disappointed some of the German charm was lost. We dined here as a family event looking to enjoy the authentic German atmosphere and food. The Black Forest is a staple German Restaurant in northern NJ for as long as I can remember. I was thinking we should try it one more time and stick to schnitzels, but I don't think it is worth the 45 min drive for us. Service was sparse - was not asked if we wanted another drink (we only had 1 each). His red cabbage was decent, the potato dumpling was decent. My husband had the crispy pork shank which needed to be cooked a little bit longer to be perfectly tender. My sides were the vegetable of the day (covered in something like tomato based sauce) and the spaetzle, which did not resemble anything like homemade (we have a spaetzle maker, we know) and looked more like the noodles that come in lo mein dishes. I have never had "traditional" stroganoff that doesn't come with egg noodles! Instead of that starch, I had a small side of mashed potatoes. The beef stroganoff filled up only half a plate (with each steak piece resting on its own), was overcooked, and did not come with any egg noodles. I started with an octopus salad special, which was a small portion but delicate and flavorful. It started off ok - husband had the herring which he said was a little over marinated but otherwise traditional and nice. However, for the prices, I definitely expected something better. ![]() This place somewhat "stuck in time", which we wouldn't have minded if the food was good. We've been to Strasbourg and have had wonderful German and Alsatian dishes, so we were looking to repeat the experience, or get a little closer at least. ![]()
